Obituary for Joao Melo
João Melo, 96, of Ludlow passed away peacefully on Sunday June 24, 2018 with his loving family by his side. Born in Maçal do Chão, Portugal to the late Caesar and Arminda Reis De Mello, he immigrated to the United States in 1966 and worked for many years at Crane Company. He was the beloved husband of the late Maria Alina Chança Melo who predeceased him in 2017. João leaves his loving daughter Helena Braz and her husband Orlando Braz of Ludlow; cherished grandchildren Jeffrey Braz and his fiancée Tiffany Duchesne and Hayley Jorge and her husband Steve; adored great-grandchildren Haylo and Londyn Braz and Hudson and Calvin Jorge. Sadly, João was predeceased by his brothers Caesar and Antonio Melo. João had great passion for Benfica and the Boston Bruins. He loved gardening, spending time with his cat Benfica, driving his Caddy, shooting pool and making wine. João was a proud member of Gremio Lusitano Club. He will be remembered by many as a generous man who had love for life and adventure and who opened his home and heart to everyone. The family would like to thank the following Wingate Nursing Home staff for their compassionate care- Claudia, Clara, Dori, George, Pam, Todd, Sarah, Rachel, Andrea, Karen, Sophie, Nathan and John. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 29 from the Ludlow Funeral home. Visiting hours are from 8:30-10:15AM with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11:00AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by burial in Island Pond Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to: Shriners Hospital for Children.
